Pag-abot sa Pamayanan (Community Outreach) sa

Munting Salo-salo (through Feeding Activity)

Pag-abot (Outreach) is an initiative of the volunteers, the staff (cooks/salesclerks) of the canteen concessionaire of DLS-CSB who are busy working from Monday to Saturday. Most of them have been with DLS-CSB for more than 10 years already until they saw in Facebook what Aral Pinoy (www.facebook.com/AralPinoy.Org) has been doing and felt that they would also want to do Pag-abot (Outreach). Then they expressed their intention to Aral Pinoy (AP) Founder, Antonio Ingles, PhD their desire to be of help via community outreach through feeding of 100 children on a Sunday, February 19, 2012.

Aral Pinoy (AP) coordinated through Liza de Jesus (extreme right) and Arnet Teneso (not in the picture) the PSAC representatives, and they generously accommodated and assisted the volunteers who joined the community outreach through feeding of 100 children in Banaybanay, Lipa City. The volunteers did the marketing, cooking and serving of the menu they prepared a day before going to Lipa. All the necessary ingredients and items needed were already bought and all the kitchen wares/equipment needed were prepared.

They left Manila by 7AM for Lipa. Cooking was done in the venue at San Vicente Ferrer (SVF) Parish Church, where PSAC’s representatives allowed the volunteers to use the parish’s kitchen. After the children's fun-filled games and simple feeding activity, the volunteers were assisted by PSAC’s representatives and some members visiting significant members of the community and places in the area. They left Lipa and arrive in Manila by 6PM.

Food cost for feeding, transportation expenses and driver's pay were sponsored by AP.

By Wednesday, Dec 21, they made an appoinment meeting with Ayala Malls' representatives...

By Tuesday & Wednesday, Dec 27-28, you would find them in a station in Glorieta 3 where they would do caroling in behalf of the victims of Sendong in Cagayan De Oro (CDO), Iligan and Dumaguete.

Students from other schools, like University of Santo Tomas, Lyceum of the Philippines University and Polytechnic University of the Philippines joined CSB.

All in all, the group managed to collect about P150,000 in cash and P100,000 worth of relief goods.

Dasol Central School celebrates Christmas w/ Aral Pinoy

Last December 23, 2011, The Grade VI Section B of Dasol Central School celebrated their classroom Christmas party meaningfully for they were joined by Aral Pinoy with Sir Raymond, their class adviser and an Aral Pinoy volunteer.

As early as 7:00 in the morning, the Grade VI pupils excitedly came inside their classroom with a strange banner displayed on the board which caught everyone’s attention. They can all read it but they were all clueless. On the other hand, out of their excitement, some volunteered to write Christmas greetings on the board while others initiated the restructuring of classroom and some prepared for their special numbers.

After the flag ceremony, they excitedly went to their group mates and talked about their games and numbers. When Sir Raymond opened the program, everyone was very eager to participate. Dance and song numbers were presented by different groups. Between their special numbers, Sir Raymond gave exciting and challenging games which the pupils enjoyed a lot while learning the value of teamwork, friendship and camaraderie.

After the games and special numbers, the pupils had their simple snacks. While enjoying their snacks together, they were surprised to see notebooks, pencils and bags being displayed along with their gifts. A curious pupil asked Sir Raymond if the stuffs are for the prizes of the winning team. They were surprised by their teacher’s answer, “No, it was not for the winning team, it’s for everyone.” Sir Raymond officially introduced the strange banner displayed in front of the room. The pupils learned that the supplies were from Aral Pinoy. After hearing the good news, they noisily expressed their happiness and excitement and shouted “Yehey” for they realized that everyone won the game. They came to understand that Christmas is in the air.

After receiving their gifts from Aral Pinoy, they started to share their personal gifts to their classmates. They were all wearing their genuine smiles as they walk around and give their gifts. They were all grateful to Aral Pinoy and to their classmates. They were all extremely happy for sharing the day with their classmates, with Sir Raymond and with their special guest and a new friend, Aral Pinoy.

Thank you to Sir Antonio Ingles for making their last Christmas Party at Dasol Central School memorable and meaningful. Athe end of the day these pupils learned the essence of celebrating Christmas and that is sharing one’s blessings and making other people happy! Thank you Aral pinoy!

A friend, Teacher Amyll Josielou Blanco, who graduated from Philippine Normal University-Manila (PNU) with the degree of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English (BSED) has decided to teach in Talacogon National High School - Labnig Annex, Agusan del Sur (Philippines).

Teacher Amyll Josielou told me:

Mas pinili ko pong dito ako magturo sa probinsya kasi alam ko I can do better at marami akong matutulungan. Ayaw ko masayang yong natutunan ko and I know it's God plan for me to stay here. Ibang fulfillment pag natuturuan ko sila. Actually I travel everyday going to school, 2 hours ang travel. Kung nagtatravel po ako papuntang school, 2 rides po ako, from our place in San Francisco to Prosperidad, then from Prosperidad to Talacogon. Pwede bus or multicab ang means of transportation. Pag nasa school kana, mahirap din, kase wala kaming tubig, at walang kuryente kaya mahirap magturo sa madilim. I know it is hard, pero I find joy naman po sa pagtuturo sa kanila. I say this as it may seem exaggerated, but it has been one of my purposes – I want to reach for these kids and their future. I act not only as a teacher but as a guidance counselor. Most of them came from broken homes. Child labor is also rampant. I have been trying not to be really involved in their personal lives, but it is one of the so many unwritten job descriptions of a teacher like me.

I told her that since December 17, 2011 in the immediate aftermath of Typhoon Sendong, all the efforts of help are on CDO, Iligan and Dumaguete. I just thought that maybe there are other parts affected by Sendong that were not given that attention. Her school was never a topic over news and social media sites. When I asked if they are also affected by Sendong, she said :

Signal # 2 sa amin. Apektado especially ang Talacogon area. Actually sa amin po kahit hindi man Sendong, mapalakas lang ang ulan, talagang binabaha. All I wish this Christmas 2011 and New Year 2012 is for our students to have books and school supplies. We have 80 students from first year to third year with 5 teachers. The First Year students are 35, the Second Year students are 30 and the Third year students are 15. They have no books and as hard as it is for us.

When I told her that three of my friends would like to donate books and school supplies, she replied:

Tiyak pong ikatutuwa nila to. At matutulungan din ako ng malaki para mas mabilis ang pagtuturong gagawin ko. Maraming salamat Sir Toni.

Then I asked how to get to Talacogon National High School, she explained:

Kung sa plane po kayo from Manila to Butuan it will be 1 hour 45 minutes, then you take a bus from Butuan to Talacogon, mga 2 and a half hours po. Kung sa ship naman, from Manila to Butuan, 2 nights and 3 days po, then the same, you take a bus from Butuan to Talacogon din po. Maraming salamat po. I pray that God will bless you more. Sana po marami ka pang kaibigan na wiiling to help us. Thank you so much!

"Dalawang Litrong Panyapak sa Paskong Pangarap."

We are involved in an ongoing advocacy called, "Dalawang Litrong Panyapak sa Paskong Pangarap." Sa bawat batang walang PANYAPAK (tsinelas o sapatos) at sa bawat dalawang used empty plastic bottles that the kids will collect ay tatapatan ng donor ng isang new or a used but still good condition pair of slippers (or shoes). Pagkatapos ng Pasko' 2011, itutuloy natin ang proyekto bilang: "Dalawang Litrong Panyapak sa Batang May Pangarap"

Makakatulong ito sa kalikasan and to the Earthcare Services of Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) as our partner community waste hauler. We will be endorsing these empty-plastic-bottles to them, which will also help RCAM to have additional income to assist too the less-in-life they are supporting.

The donors for this PANYAPAK (tsinelas) will be our students, teachers or any generous individuals or groups who would like to practice the values of sharing, giving and concern for less in life. The beneficiaries of the project will be the poor kids from Tondo, Manila.

DLS-CSB Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management Society (HRIMS), of the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management, and TAPE Inc. (Eat Bulaga) signed a Memorandum of Agreement stating a collaboration in the project "Plastic Ni Juan" last November 17, 2011 at Eat Bulaga's TAPE office in Quezon City. HRIMS donated a total of 756 kgs of plastic bottles which are now converted to 16 plastic school chairs to be donated to poor schools all over the Philippines. Last December 5, Eat Bulaga staff and crew picked up another 100 kgs of plastic bottles.

Pakikiisa Sa Mga Mangagawang Magbubukid ng Luisita

The United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) and the Alyansa ng Manggagawang Bukid ng Asyenda Luisita, through the Hacienda Luisita Peasant Supporters Network, would like to thank the Benildean Community for the outpouring support and solidarity for their struggle, especially the following Centers and Schools: Center for Counseling Services; Center for Lasallian Ministry; NSTP Area; Photography Program, School of Design and Arts; School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies; School of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management and Theology and Philosophy Area, School of Multidisciplinary Studies.

Through their support, the Hacienda Luisita farm workers became more determined and persistent until they finally won the case in the Supreme Court last November 22, 2011.

The Supreme Court ordered the immediate distribution of land to the farm workers of Hacienda Luisita and the revocation of the Stock Distribution Option (SDO). Below is the letter from the Hacienda Luisita Peasant Supporters Network.

Noong ika-22 ng Nobyembre 2011, naglabas ng desisyon ang Korte Suprema kung saan ipinaguutos ang pamamahagi ng Hacienda Luisita sa mga manggagawang bukid at pagpapawalang bisa ng Stock Distribution Plan (SDP). Ang desisyon na ito ay makasaysayan po at isang mahalagang tagumpay ng mga manggagawang bukid pagkatapos ng napakahabang pakikibaka. Bagaman hindi pa pinal at nananatiling naaaninag pa lamang ang ganap na tagumpay, tagumpay pa din po ito na dapat ipagdiwang at ipagpasalamat dahil mahaba man ang lakbayin ay napadadali ito ng ating sama-samang pagkilos at pagtugon.

Kinikilala po ang malaking bahagi natin sa tagumpay na ito. Nagsilbing isang inspirasyon para sa mga manggagawang bukid ang pagdagsa ng mga suporta. Ito rin ay nagbigay ng dagdag na lakas sa patuloy na masigasig na pagkilos. Sa bahagi po ng United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) at Alyansa ng Manggagawang Bukid ng Asyenda Luisita, ipinapaabot sa mga kasaping institusyon at indibidwal ng Hacienda Luisita Peasant Supporters Network, ang taos-pusong pasasalamat ng mga manggagawang bukid sa walang gatol na pagsuporta at pakikiisa sa pakikibaka.

I'm upholding and supporting a LIFE-BASED and DIGNITY-BASED quality life of living. And this is the context of what I'm standing for:

Makakalikasan at (Nature and)
Makabansa. (Country)."

An Act prescribing the code of the national flag, anthem, motto, coat-of-arms and other heraldic items and devices of the Philippines of 1998, S. 25 & 40. (1998).

In the New Testament (NT), Paul describes the Kingdom of God as, “...not a matter of food and drink, but of righteousness (justice), peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit” (New American Bible, Romans 14:17)." In the Old Testament (OT), the Hebraic Covenant Theology best translates justice concept as "Right-Relations" or even better as "Life-Giving Relationships" (Fuellenbach, 1998).

This "Life-Giving Relationships" as value can be associated with the concepts of harmony, wholeness, caring, compassion, reciprocal regard, and mutual valuation of intrinsic worth (Acorn, 2004). According to Fuellenbach (1998) to be just means human beings should live in life-giving relationships in the following holistic essential relations in four directions or the fourfold relationality: (1) with their fellow human beings, (2) with themselves, (3) with nature (creation) and (4) ultimately with God (p. 195).

Life-Giving Relationships is also referred to as Holistic Relationality. The basic notion of ‘relationality’ is referred to as the essential relations that extend in four directions or fourfold relationality, namely to God, to oneself, to neighbors (both referred to an individual and individuals who are part and parcel of a society) and to creation as a whole, while the basic notion of ‘holistic’ is referred to every position of truth that we hold, which represents just one part of a larger truth (Koukl as cited in Ingles, 2006). Likewise, I also borrowed Arthur Koestler’s ‘holon’ to refer to “any entity that is itself a whole and simultaneously a part of some other whole” (Mairesse as cited in Ingles, 2006, p. 32).

The following are the four independent studies with fourfold relationality:Fuellenbach (1998): (1) with their fellow human beings, (2) with themselves, (3) with nature (creation) and (4) ultimately with God; Nagahama (2006)/ Hornedo (2009): (1) Makabayan (Love for Country), (2) Makatao (Love for Humanity), (3) Makakalikasan (Love for nature) and (4) Maka-Diyos (Love for God) and Ramirez (2009): (1) Pro-Country (Maka-Bayan),(2) Pro-People (Maka-Tao), (3) Pro-Nature (Maka-Kalikasan), and (4) Pro-God (Maka-Diyos).

Out of the blue I got a message last August 30, 2011 from Jay Jaboneta [https://www.facebook.com/jay.jaboneta]: "Thank you for the support Sir!" Then I simply replied to him: "You are an inspiration to young people, to my students... Keep up the best work, be the best..." And he added: "Thank you Sir! Would love to share our story with your group [http://yellowboat.tumblr.com/about]." I was so grateful to his gesture, so I said: Thanks for the offer, I will already schedule your talk to meet my students come 3rd week of September (",)... but I have nothing to offer you except appreciation... And apologetically, he said: "If I am free Sir I would go as long as it's within Manila."

He said, "Thanx so much. i hope I could post this boat the soonest time possible... Please convey my thanks to your students in behalf of the yellow boat community. Thanx to you also, Uncle Antonio...[https://www.facebook.com/inglesantonio]" Jay is also thankful: "Wow! Thank you so much Uncle Antonio! This is a simple but heroic part on the part of the solutions - this is the kind of attitude we really want the youth to learn and show."

Then I replied: "Thank you in advance Jay...", so I asked: "By the way how do you know I'm supporting your mission?" He said: "I saw you like one of the things we posted hehe, Thank you again Sir!" VICTOR was spending the week-end at our home.
Being that he has always shown sensitivity to
other people's needs and wants, I thought
I would share the video with him and see how
he would react to it.

We proceeded. At the end of viewing he asked
me to play back one more time. As the story
unfolded he kept getting closer and closer
to me, touching my hand, furrowed eyebrows,
completely focused and zoned in at what was

came like "what if there are sharks where
they swim", "what if there is a storm and
big waves", "why do they have to climb the

On Saturday, July 23, at 10AM, Aral Pinoy had an outreach activity: "Handog-Gamit Pang Eskwela at Salo-salo" for the 30 kids of DLS-CSB housekeeping personnel.

This event has never been possible without the generosity of a lady and her family who came all the way from USA (and having a vacation here in the Philippines). Together with her families here, they sponsored the said activity.

On the one hand, in the video clip Manny is already using YELLOW TOWEL as 2009 CNN Hero Efren Peñaflorida, Jr. is saying in his Facebook Wall: "Wearing YELLOW is a commitment to help the poor win against poverty! It's not about politics or charity. It is about lifting up the spirits of the downtrodden and showing them the way to hope once more and win this time around!"

On the other hand, we fight to end poverty by making it history... but the word 'fight' is very much associated with violence and we don't want to insinuate nor imply that violence is acceptable to end poverty! Borrowing the words of Albert Einstein: "Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison [of greed] by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty." So instead of fight we ought to FREE ourselves from this prison and enslavement of poverty! FREE Ourselves from GREED to End Poverty and make it history by providing access to life for those who have less in life. We in our own little way starts it in Bacao Project in Nueva Ecija. It is not just about tree planting. It is a community self-sustaining effort to live within the means out of mother nature can offer; it is also a place of prayer and of ecology education center for teachers, students and all those who have love for and will love ecology. It is where poverty will be history!

The size of the area to be planted is 1,000+ hectares (1K) and the number of trees to be planted are 1,000,000 (1M). Our Aetas' community will have an enormous task because intensive tending and care are needed to protect these trees. Moreover, this will provide livelihood for them and each Aeta will be paid per day by 3- kilos of rice + 4 instant noodles + 2 canned sardines. For a year, the community needs 300 sacks/bags of rice.

By doing so you sustain the remaining beauty of Bacao, Palayan City which in the long run will all gone if you simply do nothing!

Please help or donate to this project of our Aetas' community in Fort Magsaysay Military Reservation in Bacao, Palayan City, Province of Nueva Ecija who are planting and taking good care of these trees for Ecological Restoration /Reforestation. The community is happy to be compensated or paid by rice (bigas). This March (2011) the community will plant 100,000 seedlings.

1. IN-KIND and the minimum is one sack of rice + 1 box of payless + 1 box of sardines. These can be raised by way of contributions by five or more persons in two weeks. However, there must be someone who will bring the goods in the area. (This can be practically done by generous individuals who are living near the area).

NOTE: I just contacted the Victory Liner Bus Company (Tel# 833-4403 & 833-5019/20) and I was informed that they have no bus terminal in Cabanatuan. I also contacted the Five Star Bus Company (Tel# 421-4716/17) and though they have a bus terminal in Cabanatuan, someone must bring the goods in the area. I called Baliwag Transit Bus Company Grace Park, Caloocan (Tel#3640860) they do not have waybill (sending the package alone with a fee) and someone must bring the goods in the areas. The fare price is Php 168 plus Php 50 fee per bag/sack of rice. I also contacted LBC (Tel# 8585999), but one bag/sack of rice costing Php 1,700, LBC charges Php 70 per kilo, thus 1 sack of rice of 50 kilos x Php 50 = is Php 3,500. It is not practical.

Thinking without a box means being compassionate with infinite possibilities: Your compassionate heart naturally wants to help those people who are in pain, not only out of caring, but also because their pain is painful to you (Paul, M.). Thinking without a box is to manifest love for other by acting on it, giving whatever you have in whatever way you can. It's for real! Aral Pinoy is now in Dasol, Pangasinan; reaching out young Dasolinians...

...it all started with a simple yet sincere comment of mine to Aral Pinoy's page. Great things happened next...

That particular remark gave me the chance to speak with the man behind Aral Pinoy-Mr. Antonio Ingles. It was a simple conversation that unexpectedly brought us to fulfilling our mission as both educators-Mr. Ingles, from prestigious university and me from a simple public school (my Alma Mater at that). He has his personal mission and vision. I have my personal aspiration. God made us bumped together in HIS unique and unexpected way. In one way, we have common intention- serving the people through education.

I want to be part of Aral Pinoy's solution as I do benefit with AP's mission I told him. This has sparked off a partnership it seemed...

Today, Aral Pinoy is in Dasol, Pangasinan with me as the deputy. We will have the "Fun Learning through Feeding" activity- a one-time feeding program of AP wherein free snacks will be given to 105 Grade VI pupils of Dasol Central School.

Presently, our pupils are under intensive review in preparation for the coming National Achievement Test this March. Hence, this activity will motivate our pupils in reviewing. This will also inspire them to stay in school and encourage them to attend review classes everyday.

In the spirit of altruism, this would hopefully be the beginning of greater things for Aral Pinoy and for young Dasolinians.

In the said forum, the very first forum where Retired Lt. Col. George Rabusa had to face young students from De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (where I have been teaching for almost 15 years) and other students from all others schools, he was asked on what "pabaon" (send-off gift) can he give to the students. After John Baptist de La Salle was proclaimed Saint by the Church under Pope Leo XIII, his relics was moved to a large chapel inside a new school along Rue Saint Gervais in Rouen. But when the religious teaching congregations in France were suppressed, the relics had to be moved again to the relocated Generalate in Lembecq-les-Hals, Belgium in 1906. Then from Belgium they were transported to Rome, where they arrived on January 26, 1937, which is the same date of the promulgation in 1725 of the Bull of Approbation of the Institute of the Brothers of Christian Schools. The relics of St. John Baptist de La Salle are now venerated in the church under his name at the Generalate in Rome. 1. What is Aral Pinoy[1]: "Pag aaral mo, sagot mo, Baon mo sagot ko!" or Project Baon?

In the Philippines its 100% free education, both in elementary and high school levels, and yet students neither finish nor proceed to the next grade level. Why? Because despite having free education, many of them have no allowance nor ‘baon’ for their snack foods or meals for their schooling, no needed school supplies, no funds to spend for their school requirements, no transportation fair, etc.

This is the kind of assistance that Aral Pinoy Project Baon (APPB) for school year 2011-2012 does to support students in their studies and encourage them to go to school. APPB helps them in their schooling and furthermore encourages them to change their lives. First and foremost, APPB upholds their right to education, and secondly, APPB envisions to contribute to the progress of our country. APPB believes that the more children in school, the more we produce productive graduates, then the more we invest in a better future.

2. How much is the schooling allowance or ’baon’?

Typically in public schools, six (6) hours a day in two hundred (200) days are devoted to teaching and learning per school year. With Php 4,000 pesos, a student schooling allowance or ’baon’ would be Php 20 pesos a day or Php 100 pesos a week. With Php 4,000 pesos, Aral Pinoy can already send and sustain a student for one year. (Note: Php 20 pesos of ‘baon’ a day is just an example of the computation here, i.e., Php 20 pesos x 200 days = Php 4,000 pesos).

3. How do these students qualify for Project Baon?

All students both from public elementary and high school are qualified!

We uphold their right to education[2] and we promote equality, equal treatment and equal opportunity for all. As of July, 2010, the population of the Philippines is 99,900,177[3] and 32.9%[4] is below the poverty line. Despite this situation, Aral Pinoy believes that a great number of people would be willing to help out these 32.9% and more.

There are two types of support Aral Pinoy does, first, support for the Already-Scholars (AS) and second, support for the Would-be Scholars (WS). Technically, those who are already enrolled in public schools (both elementary and high school) are the Already-Scholars. Those who are out of school and would express the intention to study are the Would-be Scholars.

Sponsoring a student would mean that a sponsor may either choose an AS or a WS. Aral Pinoy highly encourage the sponsors to recruit their friends and relatives to support an AS or a WS.

For a share of Php 4,000 pesos a year or Php 20 pesos a day for 200 days of schooling a sponsor can already send and sustain a student for one year.

A sponsor can be a donor or may recruit their friends and relatives to become donors to gather the following but not limited to them: backpacks, notebooks, pencils, envelopes, erasers, ballpens, including teacher's supplies like utility boxes for books, whiteboard, board marker, pentel pen, assorted colored paper, bond paper A4 size, manila paper, plastic cover, file holder, puncher, cork board, log book, etc.

4. How can the Already-Scholars and Would-be Scholars apply for Aral Pinoy Project Baon?

Everyone is welcome!

Aral Pinoy works and will work in partnership with several urban poor and rural communities, NGO partners and public schools[5] in Metro Manila and outside Metro Manila. The objective is to introduce and orient them the Aral Pinoy Project Baon (APPB).

However, on the basis of the availability of funds and resources, priorities will be given to students who are in need the most and from their endorsements, recommendations and close monitoring and reports of their academic performance, then they become APPB the beneficiaries.

5. Who are the possible sponsors/donors for Aral Pinoy Project Baon?

Anyone and anybody can make a difference!

The practice of austerity for the blessings we have within us and within our reach implies two things: the how’s and the why’s towards a more sustainable way of living. While we must learn how to sacrifice for others for their own good, we also must realize that it would require giving up of anything that makes us comfortable and secure. This is best expressed by borrowing the favorite quotation of Viktor Frankl, the very words of philosopher Nietzsche who said that, “He who has a why to live can bear with almost anyhow.”

So who can be Aral Pinoy Project Baon Sponsor/Donor? Anyone and anybody whose why’s to live is to uphold the right to life, the right to education and equal opportunity for all and who can bear the ‘how’ through sending to school a student with Php 20 pesos ‘baon’ a day for one year.

RA 8525 Adopt-A-School Program of 1998 supports education through various needs-based and sustainable interventions. Aral Pinoy seeks ways on how it can be of help in the same direction.

Aral Pinoy is into Alagang Silid-Aralan (adopt and nurture a classroom) as one the initiatives to support teachers and students in classroom level. One simple way to support Alagang Silid-Aralan is to provide poor schools the following educational equipment, like PCs, slide projectors, color TVs (21 inches), VHS players/recorders, DVD players and photocopying machines.

Aral Pinoy conducts RI Seminar for FREE

Reflective Inquiry (RI) on Learner-Centered (LC) Teaching Beliefs and Practices is an initiative undertaken to inquire on how LC the participants are in terms of their teaching beliefs and practices and eventually recommend specific course of actions based on the results and findings of the said inquiry.

What is a Reflective Inquiry?

Inquiry as a method encourages and enhances thinking. Critical Thinking as a process constructs meaning and confirms understanding. Reflective Inquiry is where critical thinking integrates the reflective and shared activities of a community of inquiry. Thus, inquiry and reflective thought are conjoined (Garrison, 2004).

An inquiry learning experience (1) is problem or question driven, (2) typically has a small-group feature, (3) includes critical discourse, (4) requires self-direction, (5) is frequently multi-disciplinary, and (6) incorporates research methods such as information gathering and synthesis of ideas” (Institutional Learning Plan, 2003 as cited in Garrison, 2004).

Garrison (2004) describes Critical Thinking as, "(1) the means to personal meaning, (2) (re)construction of knowledge, and (3) an educated person. The addition of the adjective – critical – reflects the essential element of questioning and skepticism. To think critically is to make sense of things through questioning, debate, and confirming understanding collaboratively."

In terms of its educational implication, Garrison (2004) claims that, "thinking does not occur in a vacuum; it is thinking about something." Thinking is best taught as (1) an integral aspect of a course of studies and (2) acquiring a deep understanding of specific content. Reflective inquiry is seriously compromised by an excessive emphasis on content (Donald, 2002 as cited in Garrison, 2004). That is, teaching of thinking must occur in concert with the teaching of content (Garrison, 2004).

What are the results and findings of the Inquiry?

The wealth of data drawn from the participants through their surveys, reflections, discussions and recommendations will be collected in a systematic manner so that results and findings of the said activity can be strongly validated and supported through and by other sources or data from other areas/departments within or outside a school.

Painter & Rigsby (2005) provide below these two phases of the said activity, namely (1) data gathering through Reflective Inquiry and (2) the course of actions or the products produced based on the results and findings of the inquiry.

Reflective Inquiry:

* Teacher thinks about why he/she "does something in a certain manner" and talks about how to improve.
* Has a central question that is being explored; Q. remains static throughout project.
* Teacher uses journal to write reflectively and collects some data systematically.
* Teacher has gotten feedback from others to refine his/her inquiry. But. generally, does not systematically consult to get other perspectives
* The subjectivity of the view is checked by only a few types of data
* Researcher begins to show how research is tied to others' research

Course of Actions/Product Produced:

* Improved classroom practice/new teaching techniques
* Reflective writing may be sculpted into a short essay with some back-up evidence.
* Contains findings that can be backed up by some evidence.

A. Project Objectives

Running Your PowerPoint Presentation Without A Computer (RYPPT w/o AC) is a project that aims to come up with an innovative-alternative for doing electronic presentations that can improve and maximize the use of TV in a classroom for the purpose of efficiency of learning and teaching.

B. Description and Rationale of the Project

Running Your PowerPoint Presentation Without A Computer is a self-paced tutorial modules and trainor's manual that will guide the users/trainors the step-by-step on how to convert PowerPoint presentations to play on a digital still camera and view them on a TV screen. Today digital cameras come with video-out cables that connect to a TV monitor's video input jack, you are no longer tied up by PC in running your presentation. A Digital still camera does not only capture pictures to be used for presentations. It also serves as digital storage and a player for PowerPoint slideshow. But how is it done? You maybe are thinking that you could simply save your PowerPoint file to a digital still camera and it would just run. It does not work that way. But it is not that difficult. Of course you still need a computer to create your presentations. However, when you display your presentations, a computer is no longer needed. But how is it done?
Running Your PowerPoint Presentation Without A Computer consists of the following six modules on:

* Presenting PowerPoint slides run without a computer
* Optimizing PowerPoint slides on TV
* Resizing PowerPoint slides to 8.89 x 6.67 inches (or 640 x 480 pixels)
* Converting PowerPoint slides in JPEG File Interchange Format
* Storing PowerPoint slides on a digital camera
* Viewing the PowerPoint slides on TV with a digital camera

* Showing your presentations without the need for a computer

Life-Giving Relationships Values (L-GR Values)

Justice concept in the Old Testament could best be translated as "Right-Relations" or even better as "Life-Giving Relationships" (Fuellenbach, 1998). This "Life-Giving Relationships" Values (L-GR Values) can be associated with harmony, wholeness, caring, compassion, reciprocal regard, and mutual valuation of intrinsic worth (Acorn, 2004).

For Fuellenbach (1998), these essential relations extend in four directions: to God, to oneself, to neighbor (both as individual and as part of society) and to creation as a whole. Therefore, to be just means human beings should live in life-giving relationships with their fellow human beings, with themselves, with nature (creation) and ultimately with God.

Curran's relationality-responsibility ethical model sees also the human person in multiple relationships with God, world, neighbor and self, and his personal response in the midst of those relationships (Curran, 1987).

Radford Ruether reinterprets sin (injustice) as a condition where life-giving relationships (of equivalence) are turned into death-dealing relationships (of dominance and subordination) (Wessinger, 1993).

L-GR Values as Aral Pinoy Educational Philosophy

Aral Pinoy upholds these Life-Giving Relationships Values (L-GR Values) as AP's Educational Philosophy. Aral Pinoy dreams of a venue where these values can possibly find an expression. Aral Pinoy sees each learner as truly unique and endowed by God with talents and gifts which should be understood, appreciated and nurtured. Aral Pinoy's goal is not only to assist students in their academic skills to help them develop self-responsibility but also to provide their teachers better access to training and professional development.

Volunteers

In 2007 Antonio, Rogelio, and Marissa worked together as volunteers to assist a group of teachers how to facilitate and conduct online learning. This collaboration led to the creation of StrongARM Team which simply means Antonio, Rogelio, and Marissa.

Mr. Antonio Levy “Toni” S. Ingles Jr., Mr. Rogelio “Tugel” B. dela Cruz Jr., and Ms. Marissa “Witay” A. Rodriguez are faculty members of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, teaching theology, social science, and natural science respectively. They are among the six pioneer graduates of De La Salle University Manila's Master in Learning and Teaching (MaLT) program, the second masters degree successfully completed by all three. Their mentors include, among others, Dr. Allan I. Bernardo, Dr. Auxencia A. Limjap, Dr. Miguel Q. Rapatan, and Dr. Barbara F. Wong.

The MaLT curriculum provides students with a strong theoretical understanding of learning principles and learner-centered pedagogical practices. It also allows teachers to explore innovative instructional strategies such as technology-supported learning, and differentiated instruction. The StrongARM has extensive experience in facilitating learner-centered teaching and online learning, serving as the College's resource persons in the areas of instruction, research, and instructional technologies. Toni, Tugel and Witay are members of key committees, whose tasks are related to student learning, faculty development, and curriculum design.

I, (Antonio Ingles, Jr.) as Aral Pinoy's convenor, believe that the work we have started will evolve into helping more schools, teachers and students out there in the future. Aral Pinoy was conceived to continue what was once a simple collaborative effort to help an important request to conduct an online seminar, and now an advocacy dedicated to education for life-giving relationships.

On March 25, 2009, Mr. Eduardo Barrantes Verzosa generously shared his website design talent and web hosting free of charge for Aral Pinoy (AP). Edward is a Pinoy professional web/graphic designer based in Norway (http://eccentriccolours.com).

On March 29, 2009 I (Antonio Ingles, Jr.) as Aral Pinoy's convenor had an initial exchange with Mr. Santiago Flora, Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs of Quezon City Polytechnic University (http://www.cmobn.com/news/io_QCPU.html). Aral Pinoy agreed to partner with QCPU through Alagang Silid-Aralan (adopt and nurture a classroom). Mr. Santiago is very muchwilling to even name the classroom to whoever (group or individual) who would be part of this endeavor. I will ask him to name one classroom to Mr. Verzosa.

Aral Pinoy tries to respond to these needs by involving Pinoys serving Pinoys, our people and the community in the field of Education, be it Basic or Adult Literacy . By turning our work into ministry and service -focused and energized, in our humble way, we continuously work with students, teachers and communites discover and sustain this initiative. Aral Pinoy helps students learn and teachers teach.

We continuously seek volunteers (groups and individuals) who can be partner with Aral Pinoy through its ongoing operations and continual improvement of teachers' training, students' learning, classrooms' learning-equipments and facilities. With trust in God and confidence in the meaning and purposes of what we are doing, we are convinced that we can make a vital difference in the life of our kababayan.

At the moment , Aral Pinoy is into Alagang Silid-Aralan (adopt and nurture a classroom) as one the initiatives to support teachers and students in classroom level. For Filipinos or Pinoys to adopt is "mag-ampon". The "mag-ampon" means to nurture an adopted. Ang mag-alaga ng inampon (to nurture an adopted) means that nurturing can not be separated from adopting. Ang Alagang Silid-Aralan ay Alagang Pinoy.

When I read about the RA 8525 Adopt-A-School Program of 1998 (ASP) (http://www.deped.gov.ph) which gets "support from all stakeholders in education through various needs-based and sustainable interventions – harnessing technology, providing electric and water facilities to schools, enhancing health and nutrition and teacher development programs and supporting relevant education – that will eventually improve the schools, increase learning outcomes of the pupils and therefore, improve the quality of life of the generations to come," (http://www.gov.ph/news/default.asp?i=19527) I seek ways on how I can be of help in the same direction.

I observed that according to this program one simple way to support poor schools is to provide them the following educational equipment, like PCs, slide projectors, color TVs (21 inches), VHS players/recorders, DVD players and photocopying machines.

This inspired me to take the same direction since I have been in education way back 1990. My initial plan to help is to pilot test my project: Tutorial Modules and Trainors Manual on a step-by-step conversion of PowerPoint presentations to be played on a digital still camera and be viewed on a TV screen.

In my intention to help poor schools, teachers and students, I started looking for people whom I believe will support my initiative. I told them that I would like to share my project: a new alternative teaching tool, which is beneficial to schools, teachers and students that have no enough technology and financial resources and no opportunity to afford computers and multimedia projectors.

With the help of my colleagues, we then created a dynamic team of volunteer teacher trainers for poor schools. I believe that with the support of my fellow Masteral Degree in Learning and Teaching (MaLT) graduates, MaLT students, this dynamic team of teacher trainers can eventually sustain this initiative. Serving Selflessly Our Kababayan

In an interview by Paul Bradshaw with Rick Warren, author of the Purpose Driven Life, Rick said: People ask me, What is the purpose of life? And I respond:

"In a nutshell, life is preparation for eternity. We were not made to last forever, and God wants us to be with Him in Heaven."

He also said that life is a series of problems:

"Either you are in one now, you're just coming out of one, or you're getting ready to go into another one. No matter how good things are in your life, there is always something bad that needs to be worked on. And no matter how bad things are in your life, there is always something good you can thank God for."

You can focus on your purposes, or you can focus on your problems: If you focus on your problems, you're going into self-centeredness. Aral Pinoy focuses on its purposes! Aral Pinoy always looks forward for something good to thank God for, serving selflessly our kababayan!

Aral Pinoy ay Pagaaral na Alagang Pinoy. Aral Pinoy is dedicated to education for life-giving relationships. This is inspired and born out of helping and working with the marginalized sectors of our society since my seminary days.

To make a vital difference in the lives of our kababayan has always been my vision, and I, Antonio Ingles, Jr., as Aral Pinoy's Convenor, dream that one day if God’s generosity allows, I will build schools in the rural areas, schools for life that empower them.

Today, education is an urgent call to action for and by the rural poor: the indigenous people, the rural women, the fisher folks, the farmers, the rural youth, the elderly, persons with disabilities and the informal sector.
